The wedding is over, and there is one last thing worth doing well: saying thank you. It does not need to be elaborate. It needs to reach the right people, at the right time, with something personal in it. Guests remember these notes far longer than you might think.
When to send them
- Aim for within a few weeks of the wedding; two to three months is the outer limit.
- For gifts that arrive before the wedding, thank people as they come in.
- Thank your parents and the wedding party first, in the first few days.
What to write for each guest
Parents
"Thank you for everything, from the first planning call to the last guest out the door. The day was what it was because of you. We love you, and we are so grateful to be starting this chapter with your support."
Wedding party
"We couldn't have done it without you. Thank you for the speeches, the dance moves and for keeping us calm when the schedule slipped. Lunch is on us, soon."
Family and older relatives
"Thank you so much for celebrating with us and for the generous gift. It meant a lot to have you there, and we will think of you every time we use it."
Friends
"Thank you for coming and for dancing until the very end. We found a few photos of you that you need to see. Coffee soon?"
Coworkers
"Thank you for joining us on our wedding day and for your kind gift. It was lovely to celebrate with you outside of work."
Guests who could not attend
"Thank you for your thoughtful gift and your lovely message. We missed you on the day and hope to celebrate together soon."
Make it personal
- Mention the gift specifically, and how you plan to use it.
- Recall a moment: their toast, a song they requested, a dance.
- Include a photo of them from the day. It is the detail people mention most.
- Use your gift list so no one is missed.
A thank-you on your invitation page
Alongside personal notes, you can add a thank-you message and your wedding photos to the digital invitation you already sent. Guests who open their link again see the new photos, and the guestbook messages from the day are still there to reread. If you have not made one yet, browse invitation designs.
One last thing
A thank-you note does not need to be long. Three sincere sentences with the person's name in them are worth more than a polished paragraph sent to everyone.
